Dance Styles
West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing is a smooth, versatile partner dance known for its relaxed feel and adaptable timing. It works with a wide range of music, from pop and R&B to blues and contemporary hits, so it feels familiar right away. The basic patterns repeat in a clear structure, which helps beginners focus on connection, timing, and musicality without needing big, high-impact movement.
Holiday pick: “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande
Country 2-Step
Country 2-Step is a traveling partner dance that moves counterclockwise around the floor with an easy quick-quick-slow-slow rhythm. It’s friendly, upbeat, and quick to pick up, so couples are gliding together within the first class. Simple turns and arm patterns add variety once the basic step feels comfortable.
Holiday pick: “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives
Foxtrot
Foxtrot is the classic ballroom dance of the big band era, known for its smooth, flowing movement around the floor. It pairs naturally with crooner standards, which makes it a perfect fit for holiday music. Beginners learn a relaxed walking rhythm that builds elegance and confident partnering.
Holiday pick: “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Dean Martin
East Coast Swing
East Coast Swing is a lively, bouncy partner dance rooted in the swing era and early rock and roll. Its compact footwork and simple six-count pattern make it one of the most approachable dances to learn. Playful turns come quickly, so it’s a fun way to get moving together.
Holiday pick: “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee
Hustle
Hustle is a fast, spinning partner dance born in the disco clubs of the 1970s. It has a smooth, continuous rhythm and lots of turns, which gives it a dynamic, high-energy feel. Beginners learn a compact basic that quickly opens into stylish spins and fun partner patterns.
Holiday pick: “Last Christmas” by Wham!
Rumba
Rumba is a slow, romantic Latin dance known for its sensual hip action and close connection. Its unhurried rhythm gives beginners time to focus on posture, partnering, and expression. It’s a natural choice for date night and the softer side of holiday music.
