Dance Styles
Waltz
The Waltz is often considered one of the easiest ballroom styles to learn. It has a simple, slow, and graceful 3/4 timing (1-2-3) and basic patterns that are easy to follow, especially for couples. The flowing movements make it a great starting point for beginners.
Foxtrot
The Foxtrot has a smooth, elegant quality and features a simple walking rhythm (slow-slow-quick-quick). Its relaxed tempo makes it easy to grasp, and it helps build skills that translate to many other ballroom styles.
Tango (American)
Tango is a dramatic and passionate dance with sharp, staccato movements. It focuses on close connection and precise footwork, making it unique compared to smoother styles like Waltz or Foxtrot. While Tango can be more intense to learn, its basic timing and strong rhythms make it manageable for beginners.
Cha Cha
The Cha Cha is a playful and rhythmic dance. It has a basic 1-2-3 Cha-Cha-Cha pattern that, once learned, can be applied to many steps. Its upbeat tempo makes it an enjoyable option for beginners.
Rumba
The Rumba is a romantic Latin dance known for its smooth movements and expressive partner connection. With a slow-quick-quick rhythm and simple footwork, it offers a perfect introduction to Latin technique and timing. Its slower tempo allows beginners to focus on coordination, balance, and musicality.
Swing (East Coast Swing)
East Coast Swing is fun, lively, and less formal than other ballroom styles. Its basic triple-step pattern is easy to pick up, and the energy of swing music adds to its accessibility for beginners.
Merengue
Merengue uses a simple marching step that can be done in place, side to side, or around the room. Because the footwork is straightforward and the tempo is steady, couples can focus on posture, connection, and enjoying the rhythm. It is one of the easiest ways to start feeling comfortable dancing together.
Bachata
Bachata is a smooth, romantic Latin dance with a gentle side-to-side basic. Its easy timing and repeating patterns help new dancers feel comfortable quickly. Close partner connection and simple turns make it a favorite for relaxed, intimate social dancing.
NY Salsa
New York Style Salsa is a lively partner dance with roots in the clubs of Manhattan. It features a clear basic step and a steady rhythm that makes it easy to find your footing as a beginner. Each month starts from the beginning, focusing on how to move together, feel the beat, and build confidence on the dance floor.
